Feature Quilter
2009 SDQG Quilt Show
Loretta McDonald

At the April 2009 Quilt Retreat in Huron, Loretta McDonald was chosen by ballot to be the Featured Quilter at the September 2009 Quilt Show. She will have her own area at the Quilt Show to display quilts that she has made.

Loretta was a great choice as she has a wide variety of quilts and wall hangings to display. She has been quilting for many years and enjoys all techniques, but hand applique is her specialty, as far as her friends are concerned! Her work is exquisite as it show in the number of ribbons she has won on entries at both the South Dakota State Fair and the SDQG Quilt Shows. She has won “Best of Show” at the State Fair several times. Her friends are trying to convince Loretta that her work is worthy of entering national shows.

Loretta lives and works in Huron, South Dakota and is a member of the Huron Area Quilter’s Guild and South Dakota Quilters’ Guild.

September Trunk Show

Barbara Hoff has been a member of South Dakota Quilter‘s Guild for three years. She will present the trunk show following the Saturday night banquet at the September Quilt Show.

Barbara has won many ribbons at the Lake County 4-H Fair and South Dakota State Fair. Her work with both piecing and applique is exceptional. She has a special fondness for hand applique felted wool on several of her quilts, but has tried virtually all styles.

Barbara is a retired Madison Middle School Family and Consumer Science teacher. Her love of sewing started as a 4-H member and continued on to where she is quilting or sewing for others since retirement. She belongs to the Madison and Sioux Falls quilt guilds and the Friendship Club at Always Your Desigh. Quilters find her willing to share her many talents and techniques.

She comes highly recommended by many of her quilt friedns who said, “Barb has so many special talents. Her quilts and quilt stories are wonderful. Being a Family and Consumer Science Teacher has brought many great ideas to our guild and club meetings.” “Madison is excited for Barb to share love of quilting at the State Show“.

Fall Classes
Class #1 Cut & Fold Quilting -
Class #2 Fit to Frame: Set Nine -
Teacher, Roxan Bixler Teacher, Twyla Voldseth

Saturday: - All skill levels

Saturday: - All skill levels

This is a new technique and so much fun! We will explore the art that was inspired by the paper technique called “icire” also known as lace’, pronounced lassay. This will be a pillow top or wall hanging sized project, 14 ½ x 14 ½” without borders. Narrow borders can be added to make the center design pop. This project can be made with fat quarters too, but that limit’s the size of borders you want. To use fats you need four (4); one top color, one shadow, one lining, and one backing. The better the contrast to the fabrics the better the fold and shadow technique can be seen. Highly contrasting fabrics are need for this project.

A series of quilt patterns designed to be fun and easy, yet beautiful enough for framing. The size of the quilts correlate with the measurement ofg readymade frames for inexpensive, readily available framing while elevating quilting to the art form that it is. These are miniature quilts. Two colors in muted tones were used to create these patterns. You choose what color you want to make your quilt.
